Welcome to Corkran Preschool and Kindergarten, please refer to this 2011-2012 Policy Sheet for answers to any questions you may have concerning our school.  Please never hesitate to call our office; we are here to help you.

Maryland State Law requires that the child must have reached the age of the class they are entering before September 1.  Kindergarteners must be 5 years old before September 1.

School Hours:  Two year olds and Three year olds come to school from 9:00 am to 11:30 am.  Three and five day Four year olds come from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Kindergarten hours are 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  The teachers will open their classroom doors promptly at these times for welcome and dismissal.  If your child will be late for school or must be picked up early; please call the office.  If your child will be absent on a day they come to school please call the office and your teacher will be notified.

Admissions:  Corkran Preschool and Kindergarten admits students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.  It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies and other school-administered programs.

Registration Requirements:  Fill out a student registration application form and return it with the annual registration fee, materials fee, snack fees and applicable book fees.  Registrations will not be accepted without the required fee.  Registration fees are non-refundable.  After September 30th, the materials, supply, snack and book fees are non-refundable.  The signed signature page from this policy sheet must also be returned to school and will be kept on file. All forms must be completed before the child may start school unless otherwise noted.

Health Records: Immunization forms & Lead Testing Verification forms must be kept on file in the office for every student.  State of Maryland law requires copies of these forms be kept by the school for 5 years.

Illness/Sickness Absences: See separate Illness policy below.

Drop off and Pickup: You are required to walk with your child to the door and wait until the teachers have admitted him/her.  The children are released only to adults.  If someone other than the specified person will be picking up your child, please call the office to inform us of this fact.  Kindergarten children ONLY are permitted to be dropped off at the curb.  Parents of kindergarten children must park in the parking lot and come to the classroom door for dismissal.

Pick up:  If for any reason you are going to be late picking up your child at dismissal time, please call the office at (301)894-6886.  A simple explanation to your child dispels fears that you may have forgotten him/her.  Carry our telephone number with you, please (301)894-6886.  We request that you be considerate of our staff with regard to being on time.

Tardy/Late Arrival: It is imperative that children arrive by 9:00 a.m. and enter the classroom with all the other children. Late arrivals interrupt instructional time which is disruptive to the class that has already begun the daily routine. All children therefore MUST arrive to school no later than 9:30 a.m. If a child arrives after 9:30 a.m. they will not be permitted to attend school or extra care that day. We will make exceptions if your child has a doctor appointment, dentist appointment (accompanied by a note) etc. or in case of an emergency. If your child is going to be late due to an emergency, please call the office ahead of time so we will be aware of the late arrival.

Dress:  Appropriate clothing for Corkran Preschool and Kindergarten is play clothes and sneakers.  Please print your child’s name inside raincoats, jackets, sweaters, rain boots, lunch boxes and backpacks.  Absolutely NO flip-flops, cowboy/girl boots or rolling backpacks.  Lost items may be claimed in your child’s classroom or the office.

Monthly Financial Statements:  Accounts should be paid in the office by the DUE DATE on the statement.  If you have any questions regarding your statement please contact the office we will be happy to speak with you.  Your financial statement will come home each month in your child’s backpack.   Please do not give your tuition or any other money to your child’s teacher, bring it to the office. If you have an unusual circumstance and your payment will be late please stop by the office and speak to Mrs. Heying, so arrangements can be made to keep your account current.  After the 15th of the month, if your account remains delinquent we reserve the right to charge your account $25.00 for each month payment is not rendered.  Delinquent accounts 30 days or more in arrears may result in dismissal of your child from our program.  Remember periods of absence due to sickness, travel, etc. can not be deducted from your account.  Enrollment and payment in our school is expected for the entire 9 month school year.

Returned Checks:  Due to the growing cost of fees impressed on us by the bank the Returned Check Fee will be $35.00 per returned item.  Payments on returned checks (check total and fees) must be paid by cash or money order or certified check, immediately. If your family has written 2 or more checks that are returned to us NSF (insufficient funds) you MUST pay all remaining school year fees by cash or money order.  There will be no exceptions to this policy.  Returned checks that are not paid in full will be turned over to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Vacation Policy:  No tuition credits are given for any days a child is absent due to illness or vacations. Remember periods of absence due to sickness, travel, etc. can not be deducted from your account. Enrollment and payment in our school is expected for the entire 9 month school year.

Other costs:  Other costs may include field trips (In and Out of House), school pictures, lunch bunch and late fees. Extra care costs are not included in your tuition fees.

Field Trips:  “Out of House” field trips will be planned during the year.  Newsletters will notify you at the beginning of each month.  Two and three year olds do not go on field trips away from school.  Kindergarten field trips are planned frequently and you will be notified through the newsletter.  We will have “In-House” field trips for all children; information about these will be announced in the newsletter also.

Withdrawal Policy: If you must withdraw your child from our school the office must be notified in writing 30 days in advance; otherwise you will be responsible for the next month’s tuition.

Dismissal Policy: Corkran Preschool and Kindergarten reserves the right to dismiss a child from our program in the judgment of the Teacher and Director:

Reasons for dismissal:

A child is aggressive toward other children or the staff and causes harm to others or self.

An inordinate amount of the teacher’s time is needed to attend to a particular child’s special situation, to the extent that it is depriving the other children in the classroom the level of care and concern to which they are entitled.  In such a situation, the child may have to leave the school temporarily for safety’s sake.  Repeated uncontrollable behavior can lead to discontinuation of preschool and Kindergarten services.  In that case, a two week notice may be given before termination of services in order to allow parents to find alternate childcare.  It should be noted, however, that in extreme cases where a child must be removed from our facility immediately, the two week notice will be waived.

The tuition account becomes delinquent.

The child is not fully toilet trained and in a 3 or 4 year old or Kindergarten class.

Failure of parents/guardians to honor the obligations of payments or any rules or regulations in the policy sheet provided by the Preschool and Kindergarten.

The child’s special needs are beyond Corkran Preschool and Kindergarten’s scope of care.

Lunch Bunch:  All children are invited to participate in our Lunch Bunch Program on their class days.  This program is in operation 5 days a week and you do not need a reservation.  Your child should bring a bag or box lunch and a drink (no glass) with him/her on the day or days you have chosen and the teachers will be sure your child is taken to the Lunch Bunch room at 11:30 am.  You may pick up your child at 1:00pm.  The cost is $7.50 for the hours 11:30 a.m. to 1:00pm.

Missing or Forgotten Lunch:   A $5.00 fee will be charged for a replacement lunch.  This applies if your child eats lunch with his/her class or is staying for Lunch Bunch.

Extra Care: Before and After care is offered each day.  Before care opens at 7:00 a.m. each school day.  All children will be taken to their classes at 9:00 a.m.  After care is offered each day and runs from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.  It is extremely important that your child is picked up by 5:30 p.m.  If your child is picked up late (5:31 p.m. or later) there will be a charge of $5.00 per MINUTE.  This fee MUST be PAID in cash in full the next school day.  Your child will NOT be admitted into any Extra Care until this fee is paid. Any extra care time used during a month is calculated to the minute and billed the following month. All extra care payments are considered late after the 15th of the month and are subject to the $25.00 late fee policy (see Monthly Statements).

Conferences:  Please do not attempt to discuss concerns or problems at the door of the classroom with the teachers.  Your teacher will be happy to talk over anything that may be concerning you.  She will meet with you as soon as you both are available.  You may ask your teacher for an appointment or call the office to make arrangements.  Scheduled conferences for Four year olds and Kindergarten classes will be held in November.  There is a magenta basket in the office where you may leave a note for your teacher or to the office.  We check the basket frequently throughout the day and send them to the appropriate people.

School Holidays: A tentative schedule for the year is published in the September newsletter and is posted on the Calendar page on the website www.corkranschool.org.  If you enter the school later in the year, ask for a copy of the tentative schedule in the office.  This schedule may change if inclement weather is an issue.

Severe Weather/Snow Policy:  Our school opening time on snow or any weather emergency days will be announced on television channels 4, 5, 7 and Newschannel 8. You will receive an email announcement, if your email address is on file in the school office.  You may check the home page on the web site (www.corkranschool.org) or call the school (301)894-6886 to hear a recording left on the answering machine.

Parking Lot Safety:  Please park in the spaces provided in the parking lot.  DO NOT PARK AT THE MAILBOX.  DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE ALONG THE CURB OR DRIVEWAY ENTERING FROM TEMPLE HILLS ROAD OR IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH OR THE SIDE OF THE CHURCH.  Do not leave your car running and do not leave small children in the car alone.  Your preschooler must walk with you across the lot.  Do not allow him/her to dash ahead of you.  Children in car pools should hold hands as they cross the parking lot.  Please do not use the handicapped parking spots unless you have handicapped tags or you have received permission from the office.  Kindergarten children ONLY are permitted to be dropped at the sidewalk and walk into their classroom alone at arrival time while the parent remains in the car.  Kindergarten parents must come to the door for dismissal.

Birthday Parties: Birthday celebrations are planned with your child’s teacher. We ask that you do NOT bring a cake, candles, balloons or presents/gifts for the birthday child. Feelings can be hurt if some children are given gifts at school and others are not.

Cell Phone Free Zone: We ask that as you drop your child off for the day and when you pick them up that you refrain from using your cell phone.  These times are very special & sometimes stressful for your child and your attention should be focused on him/her. So we ask that you do NOT use your cell phone in our building or playground as you drop off or pick up your child.

Smoke Free Zone:  Corkran Preschool and Kindergarten is a SMOKE –FREE ZONE.  Please extinguish all smoking items before exiting your vehicle.

Re-Enrollment: The first week of February enrollment is open to families who are enrolled in the preschool.  At the end of the priority enrollment period, we open enrollment to the public.  You can re-enroll your child and any siblings during the priority registration period. You will need to complete the appropriate registration form and return it with the annual registration fee per child.  The supply, snack and book fees will be billed in the month of May.  A confirmation letter will be sent home in late June to confirm the school days. The first tuition payment (September) will be billed at the end of July due in August.

School Directory: Each year we issue a directory of school families. This is for personal use only. You MAY NOT solicit ANY business using the names, phone numbers or email addresses listed in this directory. Participation is optional. A form is sent home at the beginning of each school year with an option to opt out or limit the information released.  If you opt not to be listed, you will NOT receive a copy of the directory.

Transcripts: We will provide the first two copies of your child’s records for free to the school of your choice as long as we are provided the proper paperwork from those schools. After the first two copies you will be charged $5.00 per copy for each additional copy.

ULTIMATELY THE CARE OF THE CHILD IS THE PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY.

Parents will inform the school within 24 hours of a diagnosis or a serious illness or contagious disease of a communicable nature.  This is to protect the other children and staff.

Parents agree that a child will be symptom free, without the aid of symptom reducing medications such as Tylenol, for a full 24 hours prior to returning to school.  We reserve the right to ask for a note from your family doctor, depending on the illness/disease.

MEDICATIONS:

CARE OF A SICK CHILD AND NOTIFICATION OF PARENTS:

When a child becomes ill at school, he/she will be sent to the office. Parents will be notified immediately and agree to begin making arrangements to pick-up the child. When the school contacts you because your child is ill, he/she must be picked up right away. We do not have the facilities to care for sick children. If a parent cannot be reached, we will call the emergency contact listed on the registration form or the emergency authorization form or the child’s doctor may be contacted depending on the seriousness of the illness.
