KUDOS: Our Community Helpers Unit was a big hit as usual with helpers sharing knowledge and experience with our little ones. We had a visit from Ms. Kendra Harris, from the Spaulding Branch of the Prince George’s County Library. She taught us what a library is, what a library card is and how to treat our books. The children truly enjoyed this visit and we hope it encourages them to want to visit a local library. Nurse Lauren and Officer Brian came to Corkran to talk about their careers. Nurse Lauren told us about proper hand washing and Officer Brian let us look at his police car. We all had fun. Mrs. Mariano and Ms. Holly, our PE & Music teachers, set up the “Corkran Grocery Store” and the “Corkran Neighborhood”. Many thanks go out to these two teachers for taking the extra time to put these activities together. So many of our parents have “life work” that is of great interest to our children, please consider taking a few minutes some time to share your work with us. We continue to be overwhelmed by your continuing generosity. Ms. Lee's class sends a huge thank you to the Craig Family for the donation of Cedarmont Music CD's. This month many thanks are extended to the Galletti Family for their generous donations and to Mrs. Staggs-Thomas for her extremely generous donation to Mrs. Brown’s Class. Thank you to Mrs. Ivory for her donation of paper and tissues to the school. Many thanks go to Ms. Sheri Saunders, an alumni grandma, for her continued collection of box tops for education as she donated close to $15.00 worth of tops to our school. Many thanks to all our families and I am sorry if I have missed any families.
2’s & 3’s Curriculum for February: February brings a hodge-podge of units for our 2’s & 3’s. We will begin February with our Space Unit. The letter for this week is Ss and the number is 14. We will then celebrate Valentine’s Day. The letter for the week is Vv (Valentine) and the number is 15. Valentine parties will be on Tuesday, February 14. See note below regarding Valentine Day Celebrations. Dinosaurs will be the following week as the letter is Dd and the number is 16. School is closed for all classes on Monday, February 20th in celebration of President’s Day. We will begin our unit on Presidents on February 21. The letter is Ww (Washington) and the number is 17. The month will end with the Five Senses, the letter Qq and the number 18.
NOTES FROM THE TEACHERS: Valentine Day Celebrations will be on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Your child may bring valentines cards for the other children in their class. If your child participates in this fun activity, you will need to check with your child’s teacher for the number of cards your child should bring to the Valentine party. Sign or let your child sign the cards and put them in the envelopes. (If you have never had your child sign cards — be sure to allow several days for this job.) DO NOT PUT A NAME ON THE ENVELOPE!! Teachers will see that cards are distributed evenly. Some of our classes will watch a Valentine movie on their party day. Sign-up sheets for special treats from home will appear outside the classrooms. Valentine parties are such fun! All classes will have their regular hours. The Kindergarten class is preparing a Valentine Tea for their parents. This is a very special day for all who attend. The children will present a short program and serve refreshments they have prepared themselves. It is a valentine celebration of love. *THIS IS A REMINDER TO OUR PARENTS REGARDING THE IMPORTANCE OF PROMPTNESS FOR SCHOOL. All of the Four Year Old classes begin their day with a Circle Time. This includes prayer, songs, calendar, hello time and explanation of the day and what is planned. Our children need to be here for this activity. Please be aware of dismissal time also. Our teachers have obligations after school and need to be on their way shortly after their classes end or they have another responsibility after class, ex. Lunch Bunch. Reminder: Parents, please be sure to check your child’s backpack EVERYDAY when they come home from school. Reviewing work and giving generous praise for all they have done allows your child to grow in confidence and self-esteem. Artwork on the front of yours or grandma’s refrigerator brings such warm feelings to a child. Please continue to encourage your 3 year old to recognize his/her name. A name card to look at might be fun! Also, continue to practice cutting with your child. Old magazines and colorful inserts from Sunday papers are ideal. This is also a good activity for Fours.
Office Messages: Box Tops for Education: We are well on our way to reaching our $500.00 goal for the year!! We need to mail another batch to them by the end of February, so please turn in all the Box Tops you’ve collected so far. Thanks!! Remember: if each family cuts 5 (10 is better) box tops a month we will meet and even exceed our goal. PLEASE KEEP CUTTING!!! **PLEASE USE CAUTION** - Be aware of children and ice in the parking lot when arriving and leaving. By driving slowly in our parking lot we can avoid any and all accidents! Thank you! ****DO NOT PARK on either side of the driveway or curb during drop off or pick up! **** ONLY Kindergarten children may be dropped off at the curb and ONLY when the flag is out by the classroom door!
Reminders: If you suspect that schools might be closed or have a delayed opening due to the weather. You can check TV channels 4, 5 & 7 for information about “Corkran Preschool”. You can call our telephone number (301) 894-6886. You can check our web site www.corkranschool.org or www.schoolsout.com or the email address you provided us for an update.
Director’s Message: ***We still have openings in many of our classes. If you know of any families that are interested in enrolling their child/children in a loving and caring academic program that prepares them for the future, please have them call us. Remember WORD OF MOUTH is our best form of advertisement! So, please tell your friends how much you love your child’s school.***
LOOKING AHEAD TO MARCH: Some of you may need a “heads-up” for our Preschool Parent Visitation Day on Friday, March 2 for all of the 2’s, 3’s & 4’s classes. Parents of these children may visit the classroom and stay during the entire class time. Each child should have a parent/grandparent come spend some time in the classroom with them. The 5 day 4’s Class will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. this day. The Kindergarten class DOES NOT participate in this activity. For the parents of two year olds, please note that on Parent Visitation Day, Friday, March 2nd that class time will change for the Two-Year old class ONLY. They will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 A.M. You are invited to come to Chapel Time with your child following the class dismissal. We hope all of our parents will try to be with us on this wonderful day!!
Tuition is due! Please remember that all accounts not cleared by the 15th of each month are subject to a $25.00 late fee.
Happy Valentine’s Day to All, Mrs. Debbie Heying, Director
